The Team
When we asked the girls to name the three things they love most about the team the three most common words were football, friends and fun! Girls come from a variety of different schools and backgrounds and have different strengths, weaknesses and abilities. Our focus is on getting the girls to gel and to create a team that can support and encourage each other to be the best that they can be.
The U18s play in the Capital Girls League. This is a 11 v11 league that plays every Saturday morning home and away. We usually play around 20 league games a season. This squad is filled on a first come first served basis with priority given to girls who played in the previous season.
What girls learn in the U18 Phase
Football Skills and Principles:
-
Positioning and Formations: Players are now familiar with the three thirds of the pitch (defensive, middle, attacking) and all positions. They fully understand the roles associated with each position and at least two formations suitable for eleven-a-side football. They are now taking much more responsibility for their progression working with their coach to to continue progressing.
-
Set Plays: Players have establish set plays for goal kicks, kick-offs, corners, and free kicks and bring their own ideas of how to improve these.
-
Attacking Skills: Emphasis is placed on a good first touch to control the ball, shielding the ball while staying on feet, and being creative and confident in taking risks. Players learn the importance of staying in position and how to connect and combine effectively with teammates. We continue to focus on the key principles of attacking movement, support, creativity, penetration, and creating space.
-
Defending Skills: Players develop positive, enthusiastic, and intelligent defending techniques. They understand that every player is a defender when out of possession and that defending involves more than just tackling. They learn to be brave and challenge for the ball when necessary, adapting their defensive approach based on various factors. We continue to focus on key defensive principles pressing, delaying, maintaining compactness, covering and balancing, and exercising patience.
-
Transition Skills: Quick and positive reactions when the ball is won or lost are crucial. Players learn to have a range of individual options and actions to effectively manage transitions during the game.
Social and Psychological Skills:
-
Fun and Friendship: We create an enjoyable environment that fosters lasting friendships and a love for the game.
-
Resilience: Players learn to handle setbacks and view mistakes as valuable lessons for improvement.
-
Responsibility: Emphasis is placed on personal accountability, reliability, and learning from errors, ensuring mutual support among teammates.
-
Respect: By treating others with respect, players build self-confidence and contribute to a supportive, cohesive team atmosphere.
Club Philosophy:
Our philosophy is rooted in long-term development, focusing on nurturing intelligent, versatile players who understand the game deeply. We promote a culture of continuous improvement, inspiring players to be their best selves and contribute to the team’s success.
Social Commitment:
We are dedicated to creating a supportive, inclusive community where every player feels valued. By embodying our values on and off the pitch, we ensure that football is a game for everyone, fostering a strong sense of belonging and connection.
